Paul Cole's paintings use drawings to begin a dialogue that questions and explores ones influence over the other. Cole draws familiar everyday objects with a frank economy reducing them down to the bare essentials. These black and white schematics provide a platform from which to begin a painting process that struggles to strike a balance formally with its roots in drawing. The everyday objects are important in terms of their personal relevance, from the television set with its jaunty Stetson hat to the crudely modified toys, but these ultimately serve as a vehicle from which Cole aims to explore the formal conflicts and convergences of drawing and painting within his practice.
