who
Twinkle Troughton was born in Coventry in 1978 and moved to London in 1999 to study a degree in Fine Art Intermedia at Kingston University. She is now living and working in East London.

'British-ness' is a modern day enigma. As the nation becomes increasingly culturally diverse, to describe 'being British' is near impossible.

As an artist Troughton is not seeking to be political or to be prescriptive about what British-ness is but to observe, reflect and create works that epitomise the quirks and unusual specificities of British culture. Most of her inspiration is sourced from her observations of popular culture such as the television or the daily newspapers. The media is constantly questioning what Britishness is and the citizens of Britain seem to have many opinions on it.

Troughton works predominantly through two mediums; painting and photography. One series of paintings are scenarios that she invents herself and the other is based directly from articles found in newspapers The scenario paintings are like scenes from a Carry On film or like a pantomime which is purposefully conforming to the stereotype of British Humour.

The colours can be hyper real and adds to the caricature feeling of the scenarios. The Pop Art style paintings are bold and bright. The work seems to be like a painted and invented version of what British photographer Martin Paar set out to achieve.
